Shubman Gill was the toast of the Indian team’s 3-0 ODI series win over England as they won the third and final match in Ahmedabad by 142 runs on February 12, 2025.
Jos Buttler, the England captain, won the toss and chose to bowl first. England made one change as Tom Banton replaced Jamie Overton in the playing XI.
For India, three changes were made as Mohammad Shami and Ravindra Jadeja were rested, and Varun Chakaravarthy suffered a calf injury. In their places, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, and Washington Sundar were included in the XI.
While Rohit Sharma couldn’t replicate his knock from the other game, Shubman Gill added vital runs with Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer. He added 116 runs for the second wicket with Kohli (58) and then added 104 runs with Iyer (78) for the 4th wicket.
Shubman Gill scored his 7th ODI century, in his 50th match, hitting 14 fours and 3 sixes. He helped India put on 356 runs in their innings.
In reply, England batting couldn’t get going in the chase of the huge total and could only make 214 runs and lost by 142 runs and lost the series 0-3.
Shubman Gill was named the Player of the Match for his 112 and Player of the Series for his 259 runs in the three ODIs.
After receiving both the awards, Gill shared his thoughts on the knock and his form overall in the series.
“Definitely (asked if this is the best he's batted in this format). I was feeling good. I think this was one of the better knocks in ODIs for me. The pitch was a bit tricky at the start, so it's satisfying. There was a bit for the fast bowlers. It was seaming, so the chat (with Virat) was to rotate the strike and not lose wickets in the powerplay, build on the momentum, and take it from there. (On his approach while batting) You are just reacting to what is coming to you without thinking too much,” Shubman Gill said in conversation during post-match presentation.
India’s next stop will be Dubai where they will play their Group A matches of ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
