Odisha state Sports Minister Suryabanshi Suraj said on Sunday that the government will seek an explanation from the Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) following a floodlight malfunction that disrupted the second ODI between England and India for about 30 minutes at Cuttack's historic Barabati stadium on February 9, Sunday.
Suraj, who was also present along with Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and other senior ministers at the stadium, said, "An explanation will be sought from the OCA over the floodlight glitch. It happened despite taking all precautions and making elaborate prior arrangements by the OCA."
However, according to OCA secretary Sanjay Behara, each floodlight tower had two generators attached.
"When one generator malfunctioned, we put the second one in service. But it required some time to move the generator as the players' vehicle was parked in between the tower and the second generator," Behera told reporters.
Sofia Firdous, a Congress MLA from Barabati-Cuttack, was at the stadium and protested the problem that forced the international match to be briefly interrupted.
"What happened at the Barabati stadium today is very unfortunate. An impartial investigation should be conducted," she said.
India chased down England’s 304 runs with ease, thanks to Men in Blue captain Rohit Sharma’s 119 runs and Shubman Gill’s fifty. India went 2-0 up in the three-match ODI series and the final match will be played in Ahmedabad on Feb 12.
