The first ODI of the three-match between India and England got underway at the VCA Stadium in Nagpur on February 6, 2025. England captain Jos Buttler won the toss and chose to bat first on a good batting wicket.
India will be without star batsman Virat Kohli, who is suffering from a "sore right knee," but pacer Mohammad Shami returns to ODI cricket for the first time since India's World Cup final against Australia on November 19.
India also made their ODI debuts with young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and seamer Harshit Rana.
Yashasvi Jaiswal was picked as the opener in the first ODI, while Shubman Gill will bat at the no.4 spot vacated by Kohli due to his knee issue. Jaiswal has been a regular in the Indian Test team and even played a handful of T20Is, scoring centuries in each of the formats.
India captain Rohit Sharma was the one to present Yashasvi Jaiswal with his India ODI cap after speaking a few words of encouragement. On the other hand, senior pacer Mohammad Shami presented Harshit Rana with his India ODI cap with a few positive words as well.

At the toss, Rohit also said that he would have liked to bowl first.
"We wanted to bowl first, but it doesn't matter a lot. Need to be aggressive with the ball at the start and then need to do well later. Nice to get some time off, it's a fresh start and this is a great chance to do well. It's very important to get some game time and try and maximize whatever opportunity we have. Jaiswal and Harshit are making their debuts, unfortunately, Virat isn't playing, he had a knee problem last night," Rohit Sharma said at the toss ceremony.
