England skipper Jos Buttler and his troops are drawing inspiration from Indian and Australian opening counterparts, Rohit Sharma and Travis Head, for their aggressive brand of cricket in ODIs.

Buttler said on Wednesday (February 5) that the two players performed an instrumental role in their teams’ run to the 2023 World Cup final, adding that England want to replicate the same.

While Rohit was the second-highest run-scorer in the World Cup with 597 runs to his name at an incredible strike-rate of 125.95, Head won the Player-of-the-Match award in both semi-final and final for his knocks of 62 (48 balls) and 137 (120 balls) respectively.

“If I look back at that World Cup (2023), the two teams in the final were playing a really positive and aggressive round of cricket, you think of the way Travis Head took that final on with the bats, so you see it can be successful," Buttler told reporters on the eve of the first ODI against India in Nagpur.

“Obviously, Rohit takes a lot of credit for the way he’s come out and played himself as a captain and pushed India more towards that style of cricket, so absolutely, we want to be exactly the same."

Buttler stated that his team’s aggression would not be limited to just batting as they would be ‘desperate’ to take wickets as well.

“We want to find ways to put pressure on the opposition with the bat. You’ve got to take wickets, I think, and it’s crucial you see how, if you let guys back for a period of time, they can go on to hurt you. So, we’ll be desperate to try and find ways of taking wickets," Buttler said.

“It’s always about execution, really. Whether you want to be aggressive, you want to be conservative, you want to be measured, you’ve still got to go out there and execute it and play it well," he remarked.

After the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy debacle, Rohit Sharma will return to lead India in the ODI series, starting on February 6.
