England captain Jos Buttler admitted that his team’s inability to "impose the game" against India in the first T20I of the five-match series in Kolkata cost them the match. India won the match by 7 wickets in Kolkata thanks to a fine bowling performance by Arshdeep Singh and Varun Chakravarthy.

Asked the bat first, England capitulated for 132 runs with Jos Buttler top-scoring with 68 runs. For India, Arshdeep Singh picked 2/17, removing both openers for cheap. Then Varun Chakravarthy demolished the middle order, dismissing Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, and Jos Buttler, taking 3/23 in his 4 overs.

Chasing 132 runs, India started cautiously, but then Sanju Samson (26) and Abhishek Sharma, in particular, took the game away from England in no time. Sharma was brutal as he struck 8 sixes and 5 fours in his 34-ball 79-run knock. India won the game by 7 wickets in 12.5 overs.

After the match, England captain Jos Buttler stated that many of the England batters faced the Indian spinners for the first time in Indian conditions.

"Yeah, we just didn't quite manage to impose the game that we wanted to play against them. They bowled well. A few guys were probably facing a few of those guys for the first time as well. It would be better for seeing them. You want to play better and put them under pressure and get a big score that we can defend,” Buttler said at the post-match media interaction at Eden Gardens.

The captain of England conceded that spin would always be a concern in India and asked his team to devise their own techniques to deal with it. Buttler stated that England will not deviate from their aggressive style of cricket, which has been their defining characteristic since 2015.

"They're all really good players in the team, and we know they're going to be hit by a lot of spin against India. I expect them to always play at least three spinners in the side. So it's just (about) those individual plans and really committing to it to put the pressure back on them.

We are always trying to be aggressive in T20 cricket. I think that's been the way in English white-ball cricket ever since 2015, to be honest. The message has never really wavered from that. It's down to individuals being able to play well and put guys under pressure and have options against spin as well as we've got against seam,” Buttler added.

Buttler’s 68 runs were the most by an England batter in the match, and he attributed his development as a player to his experience of playing in the IPL.

"I have always quite enjoyed playing against spin. I think the main thing that happens in the IPL is just an abundance of bowlers and the time you can practice against them. I don't think that learning ever stops, to be honest. I think Jimmy Anderson, at 42, is still talking about how he wants to learn and improve. I think at whatever age, that's a constant thing," he said.

Buttler added that adaptation would be crucial for the second T20 International, which would be held in Chennai on Saturday. Chennai is known for its spin-friendly surface.

"I think every venue you play at in India is a little bit unique. They have got lots of guys who have experience playing in Chennai. It's a great place to play and brings different challenges to this game and obviously the games after that. That's the beauty of the game: to adapt to the different conditions," he said.

The second T20I will be played on Saturday, January 25.
