Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill put on a batting exhibition in India’s first innings of the fifth and final Test match against England in Dharamsala on Friday (March 8).
Rohit and Gill were unbeaten on 52 and 26 overnight. The duo batted with a lot of content and notched up their three-figure mark in the morning session of the second day’s play.
Rohit reached the milestone (12th Test ton) in the 58th over off 154 balls, while Gill brought up his fourth Test hundred in the very next over off 137 balls. Thanks to their stunning display, India raced to 264/1 in 60 overs at lunch on Day 2.
In the post-lunch session, however, India lost both of them in quick succession. Ben Stokes broke the 171-run partnership by removing Rohit for 103 while Gill was dismissed by James Anderson for 110.
After their dismissals, debutant Devdutt Padikkal (65) and newcomer Sarfaraz Khan (56) put the English bowlers on the backfoot with their dazzling strokeplay. Both of them scored half-centuries before being dismissed by Shoaib Bashir.
Wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja fell after scoring 15-run each whereas R Ashwin got out without troubling the scorers. However, Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah forged a 45-run stand walked back to the dressing room unbeaten on 27 and 19 as India ended the second day’s play on 473/8, leading England by 255 runs.
