IND v ENG 2024: “England need to play smarter,” Vaughan wants Bairstow, Stokes to take a leaf out of Root's ton in Ranchi Test

Joe Root responded to criticism with a fine knock of 122 in Ranchi Test.

England have lost the Test series with a match to spare | GettyIndia and England are set to square off in the fifth and final Test match in Dharamsala from March 7. While the hosts have already taken an unassailable 3-1 lead in the series, there's a lot to play for England keeping in mind the World Test Championship (WTC) points table.

Ahead of the series finale, former England skipper Michael Vaughan has said that the visiting batters should sit with Joe Root and ask him how he went about his batting in the penultimate Test match in Ranchi.

Root, who struggled for runs in the first three Tests, responded to criticism with a fine knock of 122 not out from 274 balls in Ranchi. Thanks to his classical Test match innings, the Three Lions recovered from 112/5 to post 353 in their first innings.

However, England failed to capitalize on Root's hundred, suffering a disastrous collapse in the second innings to lose the match by five wickets.

"I hope what England don't do is - that they say, 'we should have gone harder'. I would disagree with that, I would say that England need to play smarter at times. You look at Joe Root's innings, he was knocking it around, playing technically correct, obviously he has got boundary options. I hope that the rest of the England batters sit with him or advice and ask him 'what is it that you did in Ranchi that you did not do in the last 3 Test matches' because it was a different Joe Root," Vaughan said while speaking on Cricbuzz.

"This was a different Joe Root in Ranchi. He did not play the fancy shots like he did in the previous few weeks. I hope that Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes take a leaf out of Joe Root's book," he further added.

Vaughan hoped that England would show more than one gear in the final Test match of the series.

"You cannot play in one gear in Test cricket. You have to play the situation and that's why Test cricket is the best format," he concluded.
