IND v ENG 2024: “Not to degrade or.." – Virender Sehwag issues clarification after getting slammed for his post on Dhruv Jurel

Dhruv Jurel impressed everyone with his knock of 90 in his second Test.

Dhruv Jurel impressed everyone with his knock of 90 in his second Test | BCCIFormer India opener Virender Sehwag has issued a clarification on his post on X about Dhruv Jurel. Jurel received huge praise from all quarters after he hit his maiden Test fifty and helped India post a good first-innings total in the ongoing fourth Test against England in Ranchi.

India was reeling at 177/7 and facing the probability of conceding a huge first-innings lead to England. But Jurel, with Kuldeep Yadav (28), added 76 runs for the 8th wicket to put India in a strong position. He carried on after Kuldeep’s dismissal and hit his maiden Test fifty, finishing on 90 with 4 sixes and  6 fours as India made 307 runs in its first do.

His knock enabled India to reduce the deficit to just 46 runs and was praised on social media for his mature knock. Even Virender Sehwag was in awe of the youngster’s performance.

He posted on X: No media hype, no drama, just some outstanding skills and quietly showed great temperament in a very difficult situation. Very Well done Dhruv Jurel. Best wishes.”

However, Indian team fans took his post as a sly dig at Sarfaraz Khan, who was hyped up a lot for the past few seasons. Many former cricketers and experts had wished to see him in the Indian Test squad, especially after Sarfaraz scored tons of runs in domestic cricket.

And when Sarfaraz hit twin fifties on his Test debut, his selection in the team was justified.

Dhruv Jurel, on the other hand, was picked as an understudy to KS Bharat for the England Test series and came into the team having played just 15 FC matches.

This led to fans slamming Virender Sehwag for his post on Dhruv Jurel where he mentioned that the player had to hype or drama and showcased his skills and temperament.

As a result, Sehwag had to issue a clarification that his post was not to degrade or demean anyone. But he still said that the hype should be based on performance and be equal. He took the names of Akash Deep, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sarfaraz, and Jurel as well.

Not to degrade or demean anyone, but hype should be on performance and be equal. Some guys have bowled brilliantly, some have batted exceptionally but haven’t got the hype they deserve. Akash Deep was outstanding here, Yashasvi has been brilliant through the series and so was Sarfaraz at Rajkot and Dhruv Jurel in all his opportunities. Hype sabko karo,” he posted.
