IND v ENG 2024: Jasprit Bumrah gets a demerit point from ICC for breach of code of conduct

Bumrah and Pope incident | XIndia pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been given an official reprimand for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct for an incident on the fourth day of India's first Test against England in Hyderabad.

India lost the match by 28 runs failing to chase down a 231-run target in their second innings. England has turned a deficit of 190 runs in the first innings to a lead of 230 runs, thanks to a brilliant 196 by Ollie Pope in the second innings as England posted 420 runs.

Tom Hartley then recovered from his dismal showing first innings by taking 7/62 in the second innings as Indian batting faltered in pressure of the chase.

Meanwhile, Pope and Bumrah were involved in an unsavory incident during the 81st over England’s second innings. Bumrah deliberately stepped in Ollie Pope's way as he went for a run, leading to inappropriate physical contact.

And now, the ICC has found Bumrah to have breached Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator during an International Match.”

Since it was Bumrah's first offense in 24 months, one demerit point has been added to his record.

The charge was leveled by on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Chris Gaffaney, third umpire Marais Erasmus and fourth umpire Rohan Pandit. Bumrah pleaded guilty to the offense and has accepted the sanction levied upon him by Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, thus requiring no formal hearing.

Level 1 breaches usually carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 percent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.
