India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who was unbeaten on 81* at stumps on Day 2, was expected to complete his century in the first session of the third day’s play in the ongoing Hyderabad Test against England.

However, Jadeja managed to add only 6 runs to his overnight tally before Joe Root trapped him in front of the stumps. While the umpire raised his finger immediately, Jadeja remained unconvinced and opted for a DRS referral.

After analyzing the footage from multiple angles, the TV umpire upheld the on-field call and Jadeja had to walk back to the pavilion. But his dismissal sparked a debate on social media.

The confusion happened as the Ultra Edge showed a big spike when the ball passed the bat. However, the impact on the pad was also at the same time. Therefore, it became inconclusive if the ball struck the bat before it hit the pad.

As the TV umpire went to check the ball tracking, both the impact on the pad and the stumps showed 'umpire's call' on the big screen. As a result, the final decision went in the favour of the bowling side.

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri, who was on commentary at the time, endorsed the decision and also explained why Jadeja didn't get the benefit of the doubt.

Shastri further stated that if the on-field decision was given in favour of the batter, Jadeja would've been adjudged not out.

Coming to the match, India’s first innings folded for 436 in the morning session on Day 3, extending the lead to 190 runs. While Ravindra Jadeja was the top scorer with 87, the likes of KL Rahul (86), Yashasvi Jaiswal (80) Akshar Patel (44) and KS Bharat (41) also made significant contributions with the bat.

Joe Root starred with the ball for England, returning with the figures of 4/79 in his 29 overs.
