Team India registered a comfortable 280-run win over Bangladesh in the first of the two Tests played in Chennai. India completed a thumping win on day 4 of the match and went 1-0 up in the series.

India was asked to bat first after Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss. And soon, despite 56 from Yashasvi Jaiswal and 39 from Rishabh Pant, India was reduced to 144/6. But then R Ashwin (113) and Ravindra Jadeja (86) added 199 runs for the 7th wicket and rescued India. The hosts put up a challenging 376 runs.

Hasan Mahmud became the first Bangladeshi bowler to take a fifer in Tests in India.

In their first innings, Bangladeshi batters were bamboozled by Indian pacers and were bowled out for 149 runs. Jasprit Bumrah took 4 wickets, while Jadeja, Siraj, and Akash Deep took two scalps each.

In the second innings, India lost three wickets relatively quickly, but then Shubman Gill (119*) and Rishabh Pant (109) took the game away from Bangladesh, taking India to 287/4d.

Needing 515 runs to win, Bangladesh decided to go after the target and batted decently. Openers added 62 runs, while Shanto and Shakib added 48 runs for the 5th wicket to frustrate India.

But Ashwin starred with the ball, taking 6 wickets, while Jadeja took 3 wickets to wrap Bangladesh innings for 234 runs, giving India a 280-run win. R Ashwin was given the Player of the Match for his ton and 6/88.

The second Test will be played in Kanpur from September 27 onwards.
