The first Test between India and Bangladesh of the two-match series got underway in Chennai on September 19, 2024. Bangladesh won the toss and chose to bowl first, while both teams chose to pace heavy attacks.
And Hasan Mahmud proved his captain Najmul Hossain Shanto’s decision to bowl first correct as he ripped the Indian top order quickly. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli fell for 6 runs each, while Shubman Gill fell for a duck.
This brought Rishabh Pant to the crease to join Yashasvi Jaiswal. Pant, who has been making a comeback to Test cricket since recovering from a serious car accident in December 2022, started playing the way only he could.
During play, Pant was at the receiving end of a throw, which annoyed him; and the words he exchanged with Das were caught on the stump microphone.
"Mere ko kyu maar rahe ho? (why are your hitting me)" Pant was heard telling Das, to which the Bangladesh stumper replied: "Woh to fekega hi na (he has to throw)."
Pant and Jaiswal added 62 runs for the 4th wicket before Pant was caught behind off the bowling of Mahmud just after lunch for 39 runs with 6 fours to his name.
