Former Indian cricketer and commentator Rohan Gavaskar said that things could have been different if Shubman Gill had trusted Rohit Sharma's call instead of watching the ball in the first T20I against Afghanistan in Mohali on Thursday (January 11).

Rohit, facing his second ball in his comeback T20I for India, hit a powerful shot, but not straight enough. The mid-off fielder made a dive to stop the ball, and Rohit saw an opportunity for a single. However, Gill didn't move and was just watching the ball.

When Gill realized it, Rohit was already next to him as wicket-keeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz whipped off the bails at the striker's end. This led to Rohit being run out for 0 and expressing his frustration with animated gestures, and even the stump mic caught a few words he used in the heat of the moment.

Gavaskar defended Rohit's reaction in this heated moment, saying that young Gill should have trusted his skipper in Mohali.

Rohan Gavaskar was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz:It was a walkable run. Let's not forget Rohit Sharma is a kind of a person, forget captain, who doesn't get angry that often. He is very cool, calm and collective. Now, as a younger player when you see your captain who is normally at equilibrium, blowing a fuse like the way he did, then you are thinking 'Man I've got to do something special'.”

Gavaskar explained that since the ball headed towards the mid-off fielder, it became the striker's call. In this situation, Gill just had to trust Rohit, who was already making his way for the single.

The commentator said, “The ball has gone behind the non-striker. Rohit has hit the ball, it's his call. As a non-striker, you've got to trust your partner. 9 times out of 10, the throw won't be at your end. The fielder at mid-off and mid-on will pick up the ball and have a shy at the bowler's end.”

He signed off by saying, “The striker is running at the danger end. The mistake that Shubman made was that he was watching the ball and kept looking at the fielder. He had no idea where Rohit was until he was right next to him.”
