An unusual incident happened during the coin toss of the third and final Test between India and South Africa in Ranchi on Saturday (October 19).

Usually, captains of their respective sides take the centre stage during the toss. But the visiting skipper Faf du Plessis brought his deputy Temba Bavuma with him to do the honours.

Du Plessis has had a torrid time with the toss in away Tests lately. Before the Ranchi Test, the Proteas skipper had lost six tosses in his last six matches.

However, this bizarre decision didn’t make any difference to Du Plessis and South Africa’s luck as India captain Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to bat first.

Subsequently, Kohli bursts into laughter with the way things panned out at the toss. He called the decision to bat first a “no-brainer”.

“It’s a no-brainer to bat first on this one. I don’t think it’s gonna be slow but it will keep lower than Pune maybe. Should spin at a decent pace. As long as it turns with pace on the ball, we don’t mind the bounce,” the Indian skipper stated.

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis rued his luck and said: “It shows that it isn’t meant to be (about using Bavuma as a proxy skipper for luck). Important toss as this looks the driest surface of the series. It’s about the first innings really and we need to put runs on the board when we bat.”
