IND v ENG 2021: "Jadeja must be wondering what happened to his thumb," says Gavaskar on Akshar's 11-wicket haul

IND v ENG 2021: "Jadeja must be wondering what happened to his thumb," says Gavaskar on Akshar's 11-wicket haul

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar said Ravindra Jadeja might be wondering why his thumb wound has not healed yet after seeing Akshar Patel's terrific performances in the ongoing Test series against England at home ahead of the final Test on March 4 in Ahmedabad.

Jadeja has been out of action since early January 2021 after fracturing his left thumb while batting on Day 3 of the Sydney Test against Australia and had to undergo surgery on January 12. Later, the all-rounder underwent further treatment at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.

Well, Jadeja is still recovering from the injury, offering a golden opportunity to another Gujarat cricketer Akshar and he left no stone unturned to make the headlines with his performance in the ongoing four-match Test series against England at home.

The spinner scalped 7 wickets in his Test debut match in Chennai while returned with a record 11-wicket haul in the third Test to help India win back-to-back Test matches to take a 2-1 lead in the ongoing Test series against England.

Reacting to Jadeja's recovery following the rise of Patel, Gavaskar said one month was too long to recover from a thumb dislocation and the Saurashtra left-arm spinner was himself wondering why it has taken so long for him to recover from his thumb injury.

Gavaskar said on Star Sports: “Jadeja is now wondering what happened to his thumb. He is asking the doctor why his dislocated thumb has taken so long to recover. He got hit on the 10th of January and it is now the end of February, for a dislocated thumb to take that long, ooh.”

Noteworthy, Akshar would be eager to cement his place in the Indian team with an all-round performance in the fourth and final Test starting Thursday (March 4) in Ahmedabad, as India is eying a 3-1 series win against England to make the final of the World Test Championship against New Zealand.
