IND v ENG 2021: England reprimand Rory Burns after his Twitter spat with women's cricketer Alexandra Hartley

Burns has been asked to focus on the ongoing Test series against India.

Rory Burns | GettyEngland's team management has reminded opening batsman Rory Burns of his responsibilities after the latter sent out a late-night tweet to women's cricketer Alex Hartley following the Three Lions' 10-wicket defeat in the third Test against India in Ahmedabad.

"Rory has not been reprimanded, merely spoken to by a member of team management. We recognise the influence high profile people have on social media, and have reminded Rory of his responsibilities," an ECB spokesperson told ANI on Saturday (February 27).

As soon as the Day-Night Test between England and India came to an end on Thursday (February 25), Hartley took to Twitter and wrote: "Nice of the England boys to get this test match finished just before England Women play tonight."

Hartley, who has represented England in 28 ODIs and 4 T20Is so far, also used clapping emoji in her tweet and Burns got offended by it as he ended up replying: "Very disappointing attitude considering all the "boys" do to support the women's game."

While Burns deleted this tweet within an hour, his post was liked by team-mates Ben Stokes and James Anderson.

Now, an ECB spokesperson has confirmed that Burns was spoken to by the management and he has been asked to focus on the ongoing Test series against India.

The Day-Night Test between India and England at the Narendra Modi Stadium finished inside two days with the hosts winning it by 10 wickets, dividing opinion among pundits and fans on the quality of the pitch.

England were bowled out for 112 and 81, while India scored 145 in the first innings before chasing a 49-run target without any hiccup.

India’s victory also ensured that England get knocked out of the World Test Championship. Now, only India and Australia are contenders to book a place in the final against England.

Ahmedabad will host the fourth and final Test, starting Thursday (March 4).
