Veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on Saturday (February 27) took a journalist to task after the latter asked him about the Ahmedabad pitch and the controversy surrounding the Pink-ball Test.

The Day-Night Test at the Narendra Modi Stadium finished inside two days with the hosts winning it by 10 wickets, dividing opinion among pundits and fans on the quality of the pitch.

England were bowled out for 112 and 81, while India scored 145 in the first innings before chasing a 49-run target without any hiccup.

Former English cricketers such as Michael Vaughan, Andrew Strauss and Sir Alastair Cook have been criticising the nature of the pitch. On the other hand, the likes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have defended it, saying that the batting performance from both teams was below-par.

Ashwin was enquired about it by a journalist but the cricketer retorted with a question of his own.

"Who defines what a good surface is? The seam on the first day, then bat well in the next couple of days and spin on the last two days, come on, who makes these rules?

"We need to get over it and if you are asking whether the pitch in the third Test was a good surface, I do not see any players of England coming out and complaining. You should be hoping for a good cricket match, not the surface," Ashwin said in a video conference.

India’s victory in third Test also ensured that England get knocked out of the World Test Championship. Now, only India and Australia are contenders to book a place in the final.

The Virat Kohli-led side will have to avoid a loss in the last Test to secure a place in the WTC final against New Zealand.

Ahmedabad will also host the fourth and final Test, starting Thursday (March 4).
