England captain Joe Root celebrated his 100th Test in grand style and slammed his 20th Test ton against India in the first of the four-Test matches. Day one of the first Test in Chennai saw England at 263/3, with Root unbeaten on 128.
This was Root’s third consecutive century in as many Tests, with him scoring 228 and 186 against Sri Lanka recently. Root, along with Dom Sibley (87) added 200 runs for the 3rd wicket, putting his team in a position of strength, though India picked a wicket right before stumps.
As the end of the day came near, Root was visibly uneasy and cramping due to excess water loss from the body. He slog-swept Ravichandran Ashwin and soon fell down with agony.
Root laid on the ground in pain, trying to stretch his leg out, and got some help in form of his Indian counterpart Virat Kohli, who came to his aid and helped stretch his legs which gave Root some relief.
BCCI shared the video of this incident with the caption reading, “#SpiritOfCricket at its very best”
R Ashwin (1/68) and Jasprit Bumrah (2/40) were the wicket-takers for India.
