It was a long and seemingly unending first day for the Indian team in the first Test against England in Chennai. England piled up 263 runs for the loss of 3 wickets, while Indian bowlers wasted away on a dead pitch.
Joe Root, playing his 100th Test, got a brilliant gift as he won the toss and chose to bat first. Though England was 63/2 at one stage, with Burns (33) and Lawrence (0) dismissed cheaply. But then Root (128*) and Dom Sibley (87) added 200 runs for the 3rd wicket, frustrating the Indian bowlers and the fielders to no end.
As Root hit 14 fours and 1 six in his innings and Sibley hit 12 fours in his knock, Indian fielders could only see the ball going to the boundary and then retrieving it back.

India played three spinners in Washington Sundar, R Ashwin, and Shahbaz Nadeem and apart from Ashwin, who picked Burns’ wicket, none looked too threatening against the England duo.
Meanwhile, Ishant coming off his injury rehab looked ineffective, while Bumrah managed to pick two wickets, both LBWs.
However, England safely owned the first day and it was encapsulated in one image of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who longingly and frustratingly looked at the ball going for a boundary, with Rohit looking fed up with the proceedings.
Here is the video of the duo’s painful facial expressions as England made merry:
