Mushfiqur Rahim scored an unbeaten half-century as Bangladesh defeated India by seven wickets in the T20I series opener at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Sunday (November 3).

Opting to bowl first, the Bangladeshi bowlers did a commendable job and restricted the mighty Indian batting line-up to 148/6 in 20 overs.

In reply, the visitors rode on Mushfiqur’s 43-ball 60 and Soumya Sarkar’s 35-ball 39 to overhaul the target with three balls to spare.

This was Bangladesh's first-ever victory over India in the shortest format of the game. Their maiden T20I win came after losing eight consecutive matches against the neighbours.

After the historic triumph, Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan congratulated the national team and lauded the players for holding their nerves under pressure.

“What an amazing team performance under tremendous pressure! Congrats boys! You made the entire nation proud,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

It is pertinent to mention here that Shakib’s name was taken away from Bangladesh's squad for the India tour after he was handed a two-year ban (one of which is suspended) by ICC for failing to report multiple corrupt approaches.

Shakib was charged for not reporting approaches from an alleged Indian bookie twice during a tri-series between Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe in January 2018 and once during IPL in April 2018.

The 32-year-old can resume his international cricket only from October 29, 2020, which means his participation in next year’s T20 World Cup is all but over. The marquee event will be held in Australia from October 8 to November 15.
