Australia leads India by 47 runs after a great first day in Indore.

India had a forgettable day one of the third Test in Indore, as the hosts crumbled in their first innings and then conceded a lead of 47 runs with Australia still having six wickets in hand at close of play.

Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat first, but the joy of winning his first toss of the series proved to be short-lived. India made two changes with Shubman Gill and Umesh Yadav replacing KL Rahul (dropped) and Mohammad Shami (rested).

Australia also made two changes, with Mitchell Starc and Cameron Green replacing captain Pat Cummins and Matthew Renshaw.

India were reduced to 45/5 in the first hour as the moisture in the pitch made the Australian spinners look almost unplayable on a tricky pitch. The hosts eventually were bowled out in the 34th over for 109, with Matthew Kuhnemann (5/16) and Nathan Lyon (3/35) being the most successful bowlers.

In reply, Australia were 156/4 at stumps after Usman Khawaja scored a fighting 60, while Marnus Labuschagne (31) and Steve Smith (26) also contributed to take the visitors into the lead.

Ravindra Jadeja was the only successful bowler for India, picking up all four wickets to fall, but was also hugely responsible for India losing all three of its reviews off his bowling. To make things worse, he also overstepped when he had bowled Labuschagne for 0. India paid heavily as the batter added a vital 96-run partnership with Khawaja.

The burnt reviews in particular got to captain Rohit Sharma, who had trusted the judgement of his senior spinner, but in his excitement ended up losing two reviews in the second session and eventually the third one in the last session.

Rohit, visibly frustrated, scolded Jadeja, albeit in a sarcastic tone. Though not completely audible, Rohit, pointing towards Jadeja, said something along the lines of, ‘Bhos**ke dekh toh ball kaha lag raha hai’ (at least watch where the ball is hitting).
