IND v AUS 2023: “Nathan Lyon is not R Ashwin…” Chappell advises Australia off-spinner not to replicate his Indian counterpart

Ashwin and Jadeja have proved to be a nightmare for Australian batters in the ongoing Test series.

Nathan Lyon | GettyIndia’s experienced spin duo of R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja have proved to be a nightmare for the Australian batters in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Ashwin and Jadeja have claimed 31 of Australia’s 40 wickets as the visitors’ four innings have folded for 177, 91, 263 and 113 across the first two Tests in Nagpur and Delhi.

On the other hand, Australian tweakers like Nathan Lyon and Todd Murphy have had their moments in the series but they have failed to run through the Indian batting line-up like Ashwin and Jadeja.

After watching the performance of Australian spinners, former Australia skipper Ian Chappell has advised veteran off-spinner Nathan Lyon not to try and bowl like Ashwin, and instead try to find success in his own way.

"Too often they (opposition spinners) do try and replicate the skillset (of Aswin and Jadeja). Talking about Ashwin and Jadeja... They know exactly what to do in India. Ashwin is a damn fine bowler, doesn't matter where he bowls. I've seen him bowl in Australia, he bowled extremely well. He is also very smart. He works out exactly what he's gotta do. Jadeja doesn't vary too much although he has learned a few things and has improved his bowling but he's got the skillset that is perfect for India and the two of them work together," Chappell said on ESPNCricinfo.

"In this game, I thought Ashwin bowled bloody well but Jadeja got the seven wickets but that's the way it happens some days. I don't think you can come and replicate what they do. Nathan Lyon is not R Ashwin, he's got to bowl like Nathan Lyon and he has tried to do that," he added.

While Australia lost the first Test in Nagpur by an innings and 132 runs, they suffered a six-wicket defeat in the second Test in Delhi. As a result, the tourists have conceded an unbeatable 2-0 lead to India in the four-match series.

The third Test is due to be played in Indore from March 1.
