In reply to Australia’s first innings total of 263, the hosts were reeling at 139/7 before Akshar Patel (74) and R Ashwin (37) forged a 114-run partnership to propel the team to 262.

Batting in the second innings, the visitors did well to finish the day on 61/1, extending their lead to 62 runs.

Apart from the fierce contest between bat and ball, the second day’s action also hogged the headlines for the Delhi crowd’s taunt at the Australian players.

In a video doing rounds on social media, fans can be seen poking fun at the Aussies with “Sandpaper” chants, in reference to the infamous ball-tampering scandal of 2018.

Notably, Australian cricket was shaken to the core after cameras had caught Cameron Bancroft using sandpaper to alter the condition of the ball during the Cape Town Test against South Africa in 2018.

As a result, then captain Steve Smith and his deputy David Warner were handed 12-month bans while Bancroft copped a nine-month suspension under Cricket Australia's Code of Conduct.
