Ace Indian batter Virat Kohli looked in good touch and was countering the Australian spinners well on a turning pitch at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on the second day of the ongoing second Test of the four-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023.
After Australia had posted 263 in their first innings, India had found themselves in trouble after they resumed on day two at 21/0 as Nathan Lyon ripped through the top order, picking wickets of KL Rahul (17), Rohit Sharma (32), Cheteshwar Pujara (0) and Shreyas Iyer (4).
But then Virat Kohli (44) and Ravindra Jadeja (26) added a valuable 59-run partnership for the fifth wicket, taking India from 66/4 to 125/5 when Jadeja was out LBW to Todd Murphy.
Kohli continued to play confidently, but then debutant Matthew Kuhnemann got a ball to hit his pads as he played forward. The on-field umpire Nitin Menon gave it out and though Kohli opted for DRS, the replays, especially from the front suggested that the ball had hit the inside edge of the bat and the front pad simultaneously.
But while reviewing the replays, TV umpire Richard Illingworth decided that the ball was hitting the pad first for him and ruled in favor of the bowler after the ball tracker returned the umpire’s call, meaning that the on-field umpire’s decision stood.
Virat Kohli walked back to the pavilion for 44 and was furious when he looked back at the replays in the pavilion.
Fans on social media were not happy with Virat Kohli’s dismissal and let their disapproval known on social media, critiquing Nitin Menon’s decision to give him out.
