The fifth and final day of the third Test between India and England at Lord’s started in the worst possible way for the visitors.

Resuming their second innings at 58/4 in the chase of 193, India lost Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, and Washington Sundar very early in the morning session to found themselves reeling at 82/7.

While Pant was knocked over by a fantastic delivery from Jofra Archer, Sundar was dismissed through a sharp caught-and-bowled by the same bowler. But it was Rahul’s LBW dismissal that triggered a major debate, especially from the legendary Sunil Gavaskar, who questioned the Decision Review System (DRS) once again.

Rahul was given not out initially when Ben Stokes appealed for LBW, but England reviewed it and the ball-tracking showed the delivery would have hit middle stump. As a result, the decision was reversed and Rahul was declared out for 39.

However, Gavaskar, who was on-air at the time, felt the technology wasn’t up to the mark this time.

“Surprisingly, this one didn’t bounce that much. When Indian bowlers were bowling, the balls were mostly going over the stumps in reviews,” Gavaskar said. “I am questioning the technology,” he added.

This wasn’t the first time Gavaskar had questioned DRS in this match. On Day 4, he criticised the ball-tracking technology after Joe Root was saved by an umpire's call.

During the 38th over of England's second innings, Mohammed Siraj got a delivery to jag back and it struck Root’s pads. The Indian pacer made a loud appeal, and he was supported vocally by the entire slip cordon.

India skipper Shubman Gill also backed his bowler and opted for DRS. Replays showed that Root had shuffled across significantly and was struck in line. At the point of impact, the leg stump was clearly visible, raising India's hopes of a breakthrough.

However, the ball-tracking system predicted that the delivery would just clip the leg stump. As it turned out, the umpire's call was upheld and the Indian players were left visibly shocked and disheartened.

Gavaskar slammed both the technology and Paul Reiffel's decision after Joe Root was given not out.

"You're saying it was going to kiss the leg stump? There's no way. It was knocking the leg stump off. The only good thing is that India have not lost the review," Gavaskar said on commentary.

The five-match Test series between India and England currently stands level at 1-1. The winner of the Lord’s Test will take a 2-1 lead in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
