Yashasvi Jaiswal had made the best of his first Test in England in Leeds, scoring a brilliant century and giving the Indian team the best start they needed. However, the Indian team management was not happy at all with his overall performance.
Jaiswal is unquestionably one of the best all-format hitters in the game, but his fielding is still lacking. Jaiswal missed up to four catches against England in the first Test series, giving the home team vital lifelines to stay in the match.
However, Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of India, is working to make sure that similar errors don't occur again before the second Test.
Poor fielding was the main cause of India's 5-wicket loss in the first Test, and Jaiswal was the main offender. Gambhir spent a long time coaching Jaiswal about close catches before the second Test at Edgbaston.
As per the RevSportz report, head coach Gautam Gambhir didn't appear to be pleased with Jaiswal's fielding. Jaiswal and the head coach had a heated discussion regarding the batter's catching. However, it appears that Jaiswal will likely lose his position as one of the close-in fielders.
In an interview with the media on Monday, Ryan Ten Doeschate, India's assistant coach, alluded to Jaiswal's potential removal from the slip-catching position.
"We always want depth in the catching department. In England, you're always going to have four catchers at some stage in the game. Yashasvi has been a very good catcher for us. There's also an argument for the short leg being a very important position, particularly if we are going to play two spinners. And we want to pick more guys in that position.
And maybe just give Yashasvi a break from catching in the gully for a little while. His hands are quite sore. We want to get his confidence back up," ten Doeschate said in the press conference.
Jaiswal's performance, both with the bat and in the field, is set to play a crucial role as India will look to bounce back in the ongoing Test series. The second Test between England and India begins on July 2nd in Birmingham.
