Following Day 2 of the opening Test match between India and England, former Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik was infuriated. The English batters easily reached 209/3 in just 49 overs after the Indian fast bowling squad was unable to contain them. On June 21, the remaining pacers did not show up, and fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah took all three wickets.
Karthik claimed that the team's chances were being harmed by the enormous gap that existed between Bumrah and the other Indian fast bowlers. Bumrah took 13 of the 49 overs that were bowled, only one more than Mohammed Siraj, who took 14. Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna, the other two pacers, bowled three and ten overs, respectively.
Karthik expressed dissatisfaction with Bumrah's usage, claiming that India has a tendency to utilize the fast bowler whenever they need a wicket.
"There was too much of a void between (Bumrah) and the rest. And you could see England also had it on the back of their minds that, ‘If we play this spell, we’d have a good chance.’ That’s going to put pressure on the skipper because every time he’s under pressure, he’s going to go to Bumrah now. [But, at the same time,] he (Bumrah) has got a body that he has to take care of," Karthik said on Cricbuzz.
“In a day where there are hardly 60 overs (49) bowled, Bumrah has already bowled 13. Every time you need a wicket, it has to be Bumrah. And he always does it for you, so you get into that habit. Others need to find a way to definitely push the captain and say, ‘I am ready, give me the ball, this is my plan, I want to do this, ’" Karthik added.
Karthik's point regarding Jasprit Bumrah has substance. Additionally, the quick bowler overbowed himself in the 2024–25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Bumrah participated in every game in the series but was forced to leave the game halfway through the last Test because of a back injury.
In order to look after his body over time, the fast bowler has previously stated that he will be participating in three Test matches in India. With a number of prestigious tournaments coming up soon, India would need to exercise caution when using the fast bowler.
After Day 2 of the first Test match, Karthik was not the only person worried about the fast bowler's workload; former India head coach Ravi Shastri was also worried.
"The concern is Bumrah and what his workload will be as the series progresses, because he is the one man who is expected to pick wickets every spell he bowls. I just hope someone at the other end puts their hands up,” Shastri said at the end of day two’s play.
