During the 2024/25 Test tour of Australia, Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant faced the wrath of the legendary Sunil Gavaskar when he threw away his wicket in the Boxing Day Test at MCG.
Pant attempted an adventurous shot and was caught at third man, leading to Gavaskar losing his cool in the commentary box. His on-air rant and “stupid stupid stupid” remark for the rash shot had gone viral on social media.
Nearly six months later, Gavaskar dropped another ‘s’ word and this time, in appreciation of the southpaw, who pulled off a somersault after hitting a breathtaking hundred on Day 2 of the first Test against England at Headingley.
“Superb, superb, superb," said a smiling Gavaskar from the commentary box after watching Pant celebrate his 8th Test ton.
Here’s the video:
Rishabh Pant slammed 134 off 178 balls with 12 fours and 6 sixes, thereby surpassing MS Dhoni in the list of most centuries by a designated Indian wicketkeeper-batter in Test history. He’s the third Indian batter in the ongoing Test to have reached the three-figure mark after Yashasvi Jaiswal (101) and Shubman Gill (147).
Thanks to their stunning exploits, India racked up 471/10 in their first innings after being invited to bat first by the hosts.
