The selection of young left-hander B Sai Sudharsan was one of the most noteworthy decisions made for India's forthcoming trip to England, where the visitors will play five Test matches. The batter from Tamil Nadu has been called up for his first Test match.
However, former Tamil Nadu coach Sulakshan Kulkarni revealed his vulnerability against the Dukes ball on Monday, casting doubt on the choice to select him for the pivotal visit.
Kulkarni, who coached Sudharsan during the 2023–24 season for Tamil Nadu, described the batter's lackluster first-class record before implying that the selection committee may have made a mistake.
Kulkarni based his opinion on watching Sudharsan in action on seaming tracks, assessing that he showed significant struggle against the moving ball.
"His domestic record is not great. When I was the coach, I saw him play on a seaming track in at least two matches. And he didn't play well there. His technique against the moving ball needs to improve.
He tends to play away from the body, while the secret of success in England is to play late and play the ball right under your nose. He has to curb some of his strokes and should play straight and close to the body. He has to work to get the technique right before the tour,” Kulkarni was quoted by Hindustan Times.
Having played for Surrey in the County Championship twice, in 2023 and 2024, Sudharsan has expertise playing in England's seaming conditions. In his final appearance, he even batted at No. 6 and scored a century.
He and Titans captain Shubman Gill will go to England following the conclusion of the IPL season in order to play in the India A match against the England Lions on June 6.
