The BCCI on Saturday (May 24) announced a new-look squad for the upcoming five-Test tour of England, with 25-year-old Shubman Gill named as the new captain.
The series, slated to get underway on June 20 in Leeds, marks the beginning of a new chapter for Indian Test cricket following the recent retirements of veteran batters -- Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
With Rohit leaving the Test arena earlier this month, Gill was widely tipped to take over the leadership role. A consistent performer in all formats and already seen as a long-term prospect, the young batter will now take charge in one of the most challenging overseas assignments.
Shubman has been picked ahead of Jasprit Bumrah, who had already captained India in three Tests, including two matches in the absence of Rohit in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25.
"Last year or so we have looked at Shubman (for leadership). We are hopeful he is the guy who is going (to take the team forward). It is a high pressure job but he is a terrific player. We wish him all the best," said chief selector Ajit Agarkar after announcing the squad.
Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has been appointed as Gill’s deputy. Dhruv Jurel retained his place in the side as a reserve wicketkeeper-batter.
The 18-member squad features three prominent inclusions — Karun Nair, Arshdeep Singh, and Sai Sudharsan — all rewarded for their stunning exploits in domestic cricket.
Shubman Gill received congratulatory messages and best wishes from the cricket fraternity after being appointed as India’s 37th Test captain.
