Vijay Hazare Trophy 2021: ‘Go back and work hard’, How Prithvi Shaw turned things around after India snub

Shaw piled up a staggering 827 runs in 8 innings during Mumbai's triumphant Vijay Hazare Trophy 2021 campaign.

Prithvi Shaw | BCCI Domestic/TwitterAfter guiding Mumbai to their fourth Vijay Hazare Trophy title, skipper Prithvi Shaw on Sunday (March 14) said he had no option but to go back to drawing board, rectify his mistakes and comeback stronger after being axed from the Indian team.

Shaw travelled to Australia with the Indian team but lost his place after the first Test in Adelaide, owing to low scores of 0 and 4. His technique was found out against the in-swinging deliveries and he was eventually dropped from the squad for the four-Test series against England at home.

But the 21-year-old didn’t let the setback affect him as he piled up a staggering 827 runs in 8 innings while playing the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

"It was a bit difficult but you know, my only thing was go back and work hard, just those small mistakes, what was happening in Australia, just to fill those blanks and comeback stronger..," Shaw said at the post-match presentation after Mumbai’s 6-wicket victory over Uttar Pradesh in the final.

Prithvi Shaw, who also led the Mumbai team in the absence of Shreyas Iyer, slammed four tons during the tournament, including a record double hundred (227*) against Puducherry in the league stage.

When asked whether the captaincy helped his batting, the right-hander replied: "I (have been) doing captaincy from a very young age, so I have done U-14, U-16 and U-19. I have done India-A as well. I really enjoy captaining the side and you know focused every ball, so I just love doing this and it affects my batting as well, so I am more focused."

He showered rich praise on Aditya Tare, who scored 118 not out off 107 balls to help Mumbai clinch the title while chasing the target of 313 in the final.

"He (Tare) batted so well today. It needed so much in the (match) situation. It could have gone any other way. He batted brilliantly and got his hundred, so everyone was happy definitely because finishing the game it's not easy and he played superbly," Shaw remarked.

He also credited his team members and support staff for the victory.

"Everyone contributed in this tournament and it wasn't individual. When it comes to a team, everyone has given 100 per cent, and I feel because of this unity from support staff, each and every member player contributed in this tournament, so I think this trophy goes to everybody," Shaw concluded.
