Saba Karim says no back-up plans for 2020-21 Indian domestic season yet

The next domestic season is under threat because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The next Indian domestic season could be affected by the viral outbreak | TwitterDue to start in August, the next Indian domestic season is also under threat amid the COVID-19 pandemic, especially with the BCCI uncertain and without any back-up plans for the calendar at this stage.

But the board's GM for cricket operations, Saba Karim, did say the priority will be to organise as many games across formats as possible.

In the UK, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has already suspended all cricket till at least July 1. All international and domestic fixtures around the world remain globally suspended because of the deadly outbreak.

"There are no concrete back up plans as such. There is still time for August. We are taking month by month," Saba, the former wicketkeeper batsman, told PTI

The 2019-20 season began with the Duleep Trophy in August-September and ended with the Ranji Trophy last month. The annual Irani Cup encounter, which was to be played between Ranji winners Saurashtra and Rest of India in March, was indefinitely postponed by the BCCI.

The IPL 2020 is also under suspension, with the board hoping to find a future window to conduct the league's 13th edition, which could lead to the IPL coinciding with the next domestic season.

"It is difficult to talk about it at this stage. It all depends on how soon we overcome this situation," Saba said. "At this stage, it is more important to be safe and secure. I am sure gradually things will open up. So we are positive."

"We will try to make the best out of the circumstances. Whatever window is available, we will try to incorporate as many matches as possible."

Planning and executing an entire domestic season in India is an enormous task, especially since nine new teams in both Men's and Women's category were added in 2018, but the BCCI has managed to do that successfully.

"The thought has crossed my mind (about rejig of the season) and we are extremely flexible," said Saba. "Otherwise, also, we need to be flexible due to the fickle weather conditions. It looks, this year is going to be different. We need to be vigilant and flexible for any changes that are required."

"Whatever changes we bring in, it will be for the benefit of our players and state associations."
