Cricket Australia has fined all-rounder Marcus Stoinis AUD 7,500 for personal abuse aimed at pacer Kane Richardson during the BBL Melbourne derby between the Stars and Renegades at the MCG this Saturday (January 4).

Stoinis, to his credit, accepted the punishment "unreservedly" and apologised to Richardson, match officials, as well as the tournament authorities for his mistake.

"I got caught in the moment and took it too far," the 30-year-old said in a statement. "I realised immediately I was in the wrong and I apologise to Kane and to the umpires. I did the wrong thing and accept responsibility for my actions. The standards are there for a reason and I accept the penalty."

Stoinis is currently out of favour with the national selectors who looked past him for the upcoming tour of India. CA is taking measures to ensure player behaviour in Australia improves in order to regain a lot of the trust lost amid spectators following the ill-fated ball-tampering incident almost two years back.

Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft were then banned for trying to alter the condition of the ball in the Cape Town Test.

Earlier this season, James Pattinson was suspended for a Test for abusing a fellow domestic cricketer.
