Featuring in his maiden First-Class match after serving an eight-month ban for doping, Prithvi Shaw smashed 66 off 62 balls. Shaw added 74 runs for the opening wicket with Jay Bista (18) and his knock was laced with 11 fours and a six.
After Bista's wicket, all-rounder Shubham Ranjane came to the crease but he fell to convert his start and was dismissed for 36. Shaw, who was dominating the Baroda bowling attack with fluent strokes, got undone by an inswinger from Abhimanyu Rajput.
India vice-captain and veteran batsman Ajinkya Rahane top-scored on Day 1 for Mumbai with a 145-ball 79. He got out to the part-time spin of Yusuf Pathan.
Rahane forged a 57-run stand for the third wicket with Shubham Ranjane (36) before Baroda bounced back by removing the latter and Suryakumar Yadav (0) in quick succession. Aditya Tare (12) too fell cheaply as Baroda reduced Mumbai to 182/5.
Thanks to the lower-order contributions from Shardul Thakur (63-ball 64) and Shams Mulani (94-ball 56 not out), Mumbai eventually finished with 362/8 at stumps.
Mulani and Shashank Attarde (5 not out) will resume Mumbai’s innings on Day 2. For Baroda, Bhargav Bhatt claimed three wickets while Yusuf Pathan and Abhimanyu Rajput chipped in with two scalps each.
Brief Scores:
Mumbai 362/8 (Ajinkya Rahane 79, Prithvi Shaw 66; Shardul Thakur 64; Bhargav Bhatt 3-110) vs Baroda.
