Australian skipper Steve Smith showed remarkable sportsmanship during his team’s Champions Trophy Group B fixture against Afghanistan at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Friday (February 28).
In a respectable gesture, Smith withdrew an appeal for a run out against Noor Ahmad. The incident unfolded at the fag end of Afghanistan’s innings.
On the last delivery of the 47th over, Azmatullah Omarzai guided a slower delivery towards mid-wicket to retain strike. However, his partner, Noor, unaware that the over had not yet ended, momentarily stepped out of his crease at the striker’s end.
Australian wicket-keeper Josh Inglis was alert as he collected the ball cleanly and swiftly dislodged the bails. It was an opportunity for Australia to appeal and potentially claim Noor’s wicket.
But before any official review could be considered, Smith signaled for the appeal to be withdrawn.
Here’s the video:
Noor Ahmad was eventually dismissed for 6 on the last delivery of the innings. He was the last wicket to fall as Afghanistan posted 273/10 in their allotted 50 overs. Sediqullah Atal was the top scorer with 85 while Azmatullah Omarzai contributed 67 off 63 balls.
