Babar Azam, Pakistan's outstanding batsman, was noticeably missing from the team's practice before their Champions Trophy 2025 match against India on Sunday, which raised questions about whether he would be available for the pivotal match.
Azam's participation was still in doubt, but Mohsin Naqvi, the head of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), gave the team a clear order: win "at any cost." This is a must-win game for Pakistan as a loss to India will mean their exit from the tournament they are hosting.
The only player absent from Saturday night's practice session was Azam, who came under fire for his slow 90-ball 64 in Pakistan's 60-run defeat to New Zealand.
Given that PCB chairman Naqvi was present, his absence raised concerns. Speaking to the media after the game, interim head coach Aaqib Javed dismissed worries, saying that Azam had decided to take it easy.
Naqvi's attendance at the Dubai International Stadium highlighted the tremendous strain on Pakistan.
He urged the players to give it their best against bitter rivals India, as their dreams of qualifying for the tournament were in jeopardy.
According to PTI, Naqvi instructed the players to use a victory to silence their detractors, including himself.
The two-hour practice session was shortened as Naqvi spoke with coach Aaqib Javed, captain Muhammad Rizwan, and important players, such as pacers Haris Rauf and Shaheen Shah Afridi.
The PCB chief reportedly took the time to speak with each player and support staff member in person because he was dissatisfied with the team's selection.
"It will be a great game. Our team is fully prepared, and in my opinion, they are in good form. We stand with them, whether they win or lose," Naqvi told reporters.
Due to security concerns, India declined to visit Pakistan, therefore their Champions Trophy matches were moved to Dubai. Although Pakistan is officially hosting the competition, if India advances to the final, it will also take place in Dubai.
Pakistan's match against India is expected to be intense on and off the field due to Babar Azam's uncertain status and the PCB chief's demands for a full-out effort.
