India avoided embarrassment as they managed to cross the threshold to avoid following on in the ongoing third BGT 2024 Test in Brisbane against Australia on December 17, 2024.
India resumed on day 4 on 51/4, with KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma to begin. However, the India captain was out for 10 runs to his Australia counterpart. However, Rahul, who anchored one end, got support in the form of Ravindra Jadeja.
The duo added 67 runs for the 6th wicket as KL Rahul fell for 84 runs in 139 balls with 8 fours to his name. Jadeja then shepherded the tailenders and went on to make 77 with 7 fours and 1 six, before getting out to Cummins.
Nitish Reddy made a handy 16 runs, before he was bowled by Cummins and Mohammed Siraj managed only 1 run.
However, Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Deep managed to evade any mishaps and slowly took India towards the target on 246 runs to avoid follow-on.
The moment arrived when Akash threw his bat at a wide and short delivery from Cummins, that flew over the head of the gully fielder and went for four runs. That shot not only took India past the follow-on mark but also lifted the spirits of the entire Indian camp.
Virat Kohli, India captain Rohit Sharma and coach Gautam Gambhir were elated at India avoiding the follow-on and celebrated in the dressing room.
