All eyes will be on Mohammad Shami during Bengal’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy quarterfinal fixture against Baroda at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru on Wednesday (December 11).
There is a lot of speculations whether the senior pacer will travel to Australia for the remaining three Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
According to a report, Shami’s tour Down Under has been derailed after India skipper’s Rohit Sharma's fresh injury revelation.
Shami has not played for India since his appearance in the ODI World Cup final in November last year. The right-arm quick underwent an operation on his Achilles tendon earlier this year, and then had an extended rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.
Shami recently made his return to competitive action through the Ranji Trophy for Bengal. He is currently plying his trade in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
However, Rohit's recent statement supposedly left the BCCI pondering whether Shami should be sent to Australia for the Test series.
As per a report in The Indian Express, Shami underwent a fitness test recently. Given the indications from the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), he isn't departing for Australia anytime soon.
In fact, the BCCI is still concerned whether Shami can bowl lengthy spells in a Test match, and thus the Centre of Excellence staff has his eyes on Shami's fitness, which is being monitored on a daily basis in Bengaluru.
Addressing the media after India’s 10-wicket defeat in the second Test at the Adelaide Oval, Rohit had provided a worrying update on Shami, stating that the right-arm fast bowler experienced swelling in his knees while playing for Bengal in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
"We are just monitoring him because while playing (in the) Syed Mushtaq Ali, he again got some swelling in his knee. Obviously (that) hampers his preparation to come and play a Test match. We want to be very, very careful. We don't want to bring him here in a situation and he plays and then he pulls up sore or something happens. We don't want to put pressure on him to come here and do the job for the team. So, there are some professionals who are monitoring him," Rohit told reporters.
Despite Rohit's claim, the Bengal team management is yet to clear the air regarding Mohammad Shami’s fresh injury.
