Young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal impressed one and all with his batting exploits in the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test against Australia in Perth last week.
After falling for an eight-ball duck in the first innings to Mitchell Starc, the southpaw bounced back strongly in the second dig, smashing 161 off 297 balls with 15 boundaries and 3 sixes.
During his match-winning ton, Jaiswal sledged Starc by saying “You’re bowling too slow”. At that time, the left-arm pacer turned around and smiled as he walked to his bowling mark.
Ahead of the second Test in Adelaide, Starc addressed the much-talked-about incident, saying that he didn’t hear Jaiswal’s sledge during the game.
"I didn't actually hear him say I bowl too slow. I don't say too much to people these days. I may have back in the day but now I just sort of get on with it. Played that flick shot and I think I bowled pretty much the same ball and he defended it. I said where is the flick shot and he laughed at me and we just left it at that," Starc told cricket.com.au.
Despite the banter, Starc appreciated Jaiswal’s stunning display in Perth’s second innings, praising the youngster’s adaptability and skill.
"He'll play a lot of cricket for India and be highly successful. Certainly played really, really well in that second innings. He adapted to conditions through that first Test. We got him cheaply in the first innings and he adapted to that and played a fantastic innings so full credit to him. He is one of those new crop of fearless young cricketers around the world."
Yashasvi Jaiswal has represented India in 15 Tests so far, amassing 1568 runs at an average of 58.07, including four hundreds and eight half-centuries.
