Star India batter Virat Kohli’s face dominated the front pages of Australian newspapers in the lead up to the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which got underway in Perth last week.
Kohli played a key role in India’s 295-run victory over Australia at the Optus Stadium, hitting an unbeaten century (100) at the Optus Stadium. This knock also marked his return to form in the longest format after a dismal home Test season.
The two teams will now square off in a pink-ball Test match, slated to be held at the Adelaide Oval from December 6.
Ahead of the second Test, several Australian players were asked which Indian player they would like to have in their team.
India skipper Rohit Sharma was snubbed by all the Aussie players who were part of the game, as the choices were divided between Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah.
During an interview with ABC Sports, the likes of Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, and Alex Carey unanimously expressed their desire to have Kohli in their lineup, acknowledging his exceptional batting acumen.
Glenn Maxwell, who has shared the dressing room with Kohli in the IPL for RCB, highlighted the Indian stalwart’s remarkable performances against Australia across formats.
"Well, it's probably hard to get past my RCB teammate. Virat. That's gonna be a popular answer. I don't really care what he does against other nations. But it seems like every time against Australia, he grows a couple of inches and just brings his best performances. He'll be hard work this summer," said Maxwell.
On the other hand, Steve Smith and Travis Head picked Bumrah, with the latter explaining that it was only so that he would not have to face the ace pacer.
"Bumrah. Yeah, he's pretty good. Good skill set," said Smith.
"Bumrah. Don't have to face him," said Head.
However, Australian captain Pat Cummins, in a cheeky response, picked none, much to the amusement of the interviewer.
