Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president Mohsin Naqvi has reportedly refused to hand over the Asia Cup trophy to the victorious Indian team. Instead, Naqvi, who also holds the posts of PCB chief and Pakistan’s Interior Ministry, has asked India skipper Suryakumar Yadav to collect the trophy in person from the ACC office.
India’s Asia Cup 2025 triumph was marred by a controversy at the presentation ceremony, where the Suryakumar Yadav-led side refused to accept the trophy from Naqvi, who shared anti-India sentiments on social media throughout the tournament.
Despite India's refusal to receive the trophy from him, Naqvi remained on stage, and the silverware was never handed over. The Men in Blue were ready to receive the trophy from Emirates Cricket Board vice-chairman Khalid Al Zarooni, who was also present on the dais, but the ACC chairman did not allow this.
The ceremony concluded prematurely, with Mohsin Naqvi taking the trophy and winners’ medals into his custody.
Two days after the fiasco, Pakistan media outlet Geo Super reported that Naqvi has rejected BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla’s repeated demand to hand over the Asia Cup trophy, asserting that the silverware should be collected by the Indian captain in person.
According to the report, Shukla repeatedly pressed for the trophy handover during a routine ACC meeting in Dubai on Tuesday (September 30). Naqvi, however, responded that the issue was not part of the meeting’s agenda. After further insistence, he stated that if the Indian team wanted the trophy, its captain should visit the ACC office personally to collect it.
The report further claimed that no decision was taken on whether the trophy will be handed over to the Indian side.
It is unlikely that any representative from India will go to the ACC office to receive the trophy and the medallions, considering they had refused the same during the Asia Cup presentation ceremony itself.
Meanwhile, a report published in India Today suggests that Mohsin Naqvi has apologised to the BCCI over the chaotic aftermath of the Asia Cup final.
As per the report, Naqvi expressed regret to the Indian board, acknowledging that the situation should not have escalated the way it did.
Even though Naqvi issued an apology, he remained firm in his stance and refused to return the trophy to the Indian team. He maintained that if the Indian side wanted the trophy, the captain should personally visit the ACC office.
The BCCI is expected to file an official complaint to the ICC in their next meeting with the apex body.
