Indian T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav spoke about the theatrics after the Men in Blue won the final of the Asia Cup 2025 against Pakistan on Sunday, September 28. India defeated Pakistan by 5 wickets in the summit clash in a close-fought game.
Tilak Varma, with 69*, took India home with a calculated knock after India had lost 3 wickets for 20 runs in powerplay overs in the chase of a 147-run target. Earlier, Kuldeep Yadav’s 4/30 restricted Pakistan to 146, despite Sahibzada Farhan’s half-century.
Tilak Varma was named the Player of the Match, Kuldeep Yadav the MVP of the Asia Cup, and Abhishek Sharma won the Player of the Tournament. They all received their trophies and checks from dignitaries on the dais.
However, the Indian team had clarified that they will not receive the Asia Cup trophy and winning medals from ACC and PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi, who remained on the stage for more than 40 minutes as organizers struggled to come up with a solution.
In the end, Mohsin Naqvi left the stadium in rage, taking the medals and trophy with him, while the Indian team celebrated without the trophy in hand.
Suryakumar Yadav, in a chat with the Indian Express, shed light on the post-final theatrics, slamming Naqvi, saying he ran away with the trophy.
"We didn't close the door and sit inside the dressing room. We didn't make anyone wait for the presentation ceremony. Trophy leke bhaag gaye woh (They ran away with the trophy). That's what I saw. I don't know; some people were making a video of us, but we were standing. We didn't go inside," he said.
A fresh video has also surfaced on social media, showing an official reclaiming the trophy when the ACC chief opted to walk out.
Suryakumar explained that neither the government nor the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) gave them instructions regarding any such act throughout the competition. The team was the only one to decide not to collect the trophy from Naqvi.
"First of all, let me make it clear: no one from the government or the BCCI told us anything throughout the tournament that if someone gives a trophy, we won't take it. We took that decision on our own on the ground. They (ACC officials) were standing there on the stage, and we were standing below. I saw them talking on stage, and I don't know the details of their chat. Some in the crowd started booing. And then we saw someone who was their representative taking the trophy and running away," he said.
Cricbuzz has reported that the BCCI will lodge an official complaint with the ACC and bring up the issue in the AGM, and ask Mohsin Naqvi to return the trophy and medals so that they can be transported to India.
