Steve Smith's marathon knock of 144 runs rescued Australia on the first day of first Ashes Test against England in Edgbaston. 

Earlier Australia won the toss and opted to bat first but openers couldn't give a good start and both Warner and Bancroft got out in single digits off Stuart Broad bowling and later Khawaja also perished off cheaply and at 35/3 Australia was in deep trouble. Travis Head counter attacked and his 64 runs partnership with Smith recovered Australia a bit but in the post-lunch session Australia collapsed and lost five wickets for 23 runs and reduced to 122/8. Steve Smith was going well at the other end and with Peter Siddle started the rebuilding phase and also brought up his fifty. Peter Siddle also got set and both the batsmen took the score over 200 runs. Moeen Ali broke this 88 runs stand by removing Peter Siddle for 44 runs.

In the end, Steve Smith changed his gears and smashed all England bowlers and brought up his 24th Test hundred. Eventually Broad dismissed Smith for 144 runs and Australia bowled out for a par score of 284 runs. Stuart Broad took 5 wickets and in reply England ended on 10/0 at stumps.
