AUS v IND 2020-21: "Century would've been good," Shubman Gill's father reacts to his son's heroics at Gabba

India’s young opening batsman Shubman Gill’s father Lakhwinder Gill had the most desi Indian parent reaction to his son’s performance at The Gabba, saying he should have scored a century as it would’ve been good for the youngster’s confidence.

The right-hander put up a strong fight against the star-studded Australian bowling attack and scored a brilliant knock of 91 off just 146 deliveries, as well as, added solid 114 runs with Cheteshwar Pujara for the second wicket before being undone by Nathan Lyon to gave India a strong start at The Gabba.

Mr. Gill told Times of India: “A century would have been good for his confidence. He was batting so well, and I don't know why all of a sudden, he played away from his body.”

However, Gill missed out on his maiden Test hundred by just 9 runs but his excellent innings paved the way for India’s glorious victory as his knock gave the tourists the much-needed momentum at the top of the order before Rishabh Pant’s 89* sealed a historic win for India against Australia at The Gabba.

The 21-year-old played a number of cracking strokes during his innings at The Gabba, but his father was disappointed with the youngster’s dismissal method. He has finished his maiden Test tour with 259 runs at 51 in his 6 innings in the four-Test series against Australia.

The proud father continued, “The six innings he has batted in this Test series, he was always looking comfortable at the crease. But for me, the worrying sign is his mode of dismissals. He is chasing the ball way outside the off stump, and I am sure other teams would have noticed it. Hopefully, he will learn from it and will not repeat this mistake.”

He further said his family is just counting days to meet their son since they haven’t met the cricketer for the last six months – first played in the IPL 2020 and the Australia tour.

Senior Gill signed off by saying, “For the past six months, we have only seen him on TV or through video calls. He has been living in the bio-bubble for the past six months. We can't wait to meet him.”
