AUS v IND 2020-21: Yuvraj Singh reveals how he helped Shubman Gill in the preparation for Australia series

Gill played a key role in India’s 2-1 Test series win over Australia.

Shubman Gill | GettyShubman Gill, who was touted as the next big thing in Indian cricket, lived up to the expectations during the just-concluded Test series in Australia.

Gill made his much-awaited Test debut in the second game at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground and played a key role in India’s 2-1 series win over the hosts.

The stylish right-hander played 6 innings in this series and amassed 259 runs at an impressive average of 51.80, including two half-centuries.

While it was a dream come true for Gill, his mentor and former India cricketer Yuvraj Singh recalled those days when he would work with the Punjab lad to make him ready for the tour Down Under.

During the COVID-19 hiatus last year, Shubman and a few other Punjab cricketers had trained under Yuvraj’s guidance.

“The aim was obviously (to prepare for) the Australia series. To work on the short ball and defence. Only good defence helps you against quality fast bowlers,” Yuvraj told Sportstar in an exclusive chat.

It was during that phase Yuvraj also arranged a call between Gill and his ‘childhood hero’ Sachin Tendulkar, who shared a few tips with the youngster.

“I got him to speak to Sachin Tendulkar, who also stressed on developing a good defence to survive on challenging pitches. Front-foot defence and tackling swing were also the areas we worked on,” Yuvraj said.

Having observed Shubman Gill from the close quarters, Yuvraj is pleased to see the progress of the 21-year-old batsman.

“He has been with the team for a year now and that has prepared him well. He was ready for the Australia tour, and he looked solid as an opener.”

Gill top-scored with 91 as India chased down 328 in the fourth innings to defeat Australia by 3 wickets at the Gabba on Tuesday (January 19).

He will now be seen in action in the home Test series against England from February 5 and Yuvraj expects him to put up a fine show.

“He is in a good position in the team. The skills were always there but now he will have the confidence. The fear of failure is gone, and he can perform in any part of the world. I expect him to grow in the series against England,” Yuvraj said.
