AUS v IND 2020-21: Mohammed Siraj repeatedly called a "grub" by group of fans at the Gabba, says report

Washington Sundar was also targeted by a group of fans during the first day's play in Brisbane.

Mohammed Siraj | GettyDuring the third Test between Australia and India in Sydney, cricket fraternity witnessed some ugly scenes as visiting pacers, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, were subjected to racial abuse by the crowd on the second, third and fourth day.

In fact, play was halted for a few minutes after Siraj complained of racial abuse from a section of the crowd on the penultimate day, leading to expulsion of some spectators and an unreserved apology from Cricket Australia.

After that incident, it was expected that the Australian crowd will learn some lessons but they don’t seem to.

According to a report published in the Sydney Morning Herald, Siraj was repeatedly called a "grub" by a group of fans at the Gabba during the first day’s play in the fourth Test.

Speaking to the newspaper, a fan said that the fast bowler was repeatedly labelled a "grub" by vocal spectators in front of section 215 and 216 at the Gabba.

Spinner Washington Sundar, who received his maiden Test cap in Brisbane, was also targeted by the unruly section.

"The guys behind me have been calling - shouting - both Washington and Siraj grubs," a spectator named Kate said.

"It started targeted at Siraj and it was a chant similar to the SCG one (in which fans sung to the tune of Que Sera, Sera but substituted the lyrics with Que Shiraz, Shiraz).

"But this time it was Siraj. I suspect it's not a coincidence that it's Siraj being targeted post the SCG stuff."

As per the report, a man in that section was also heard yelling, "Siraj, give us a wave, give us a wave, give us a wave. Siraj, you bloody grub."

However, none of the Indian players registered a complaint to anything said by crowd members all day.
