All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja shed light on India’s bowling plans after the end of day 2 of the third Test between Australia and India being played at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). Both teams are 1-1 in the series so far.
Australia batted first after Tim Paine won the toss and resumed their innings on day 2 from 166/2. Marnus Labuschagne fell for 91, but Steve Smith made 131 and was the last man dismissed as Australia folded for 338 runs.
India replied with 96/2 at the close of the day’s play with Shubman Gill making 50 and Rohit Sharma making 26 runs. Rahane and Pujara were the not out batsmen when stumps were called.
Ravindra Jadeja starred for India with the ball picking 4/62 and running Smith out to end Australia’s innings, as well.
Speaking on the bowling plans, Jadeja said, “The idea was to create pressure as this wasn't a wicket where you would get a chance in every over. You can't bowl all deliveries at the same pace on this wicket as there was no turn on offer. You had to mix and match and create angles.”
He also talked about his improved batting abilities as well, which were on display in the second Test at Melbourne, where he scored a vital 57 and had a good outing in the preceding limited-overs series as well.
"Not just last 12-18 months, from the time I started playing, that's what has been my role. Whenever I am playing, I try to contribute in both departments of the game.
And whenever I have been given opportunities, more often than not, I have delivered. Yes, outside India, my batting performances have been highlighted more. I am not thinking too much only want to cash in on every chance that I get," Jadeja said.
Jadeja, who has three FC triple-hundreds, also said that he doesn’t mind batting up the order.
"The higher up the order I bat, I play with more responsibility, and playing with a top-order batsman, you interact and gain confidence. About what we need to do and what we don't need to do.
"Also you get a lot of time to plan and set your innings as per match situation. Initially, if I get start, then I play in a flow. It is good if I bat high up in the order," said Jadeja without specifying the position where he wanted to bat.
When asked about his preferred position, he joked: "Tell me should I open?"
Jadeja stressed the importance of being patient on the slow SCG surface when asked about India’s plans for day 3, as they still trail by 242 runs and have 8 wickets in hand.
"The approach tomorrow should be simple. One should spend time on the wicket. Australian bowlers are good and you won't get too many loose balls. You have to wait for it and that theory will suit our batting unit,” the all-rounder said.
Last but not the least, Jadeja praised young teammate Shubman Gill, who struck his maiden fifty on Friday. "He has the temperament to play long innings. He got a good start today. He is showing good signs. Hopefully, he will have a long career," Jadeja signed off.
