With the ideas floating about promoting Ajinkya Rahane to the full-time captaincy of the Indian Test team, former Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Deep Dasgupta said questions are only rising because people don’t approve of Virat Kohli’s expressive approach.

Recently, Rahane – who is currently captaining Team India in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, has led the tourists to a memorable 8-wicket win in the Boxing Day Test following an embarrassing defeat in the Adelaide Test to level the four-Test series 1-1.

The right-hander has led India from the front, hitting an impressive 112 off 223 balls to ensure a big win for the regaining Border-Gavaskar Trophy champions in Melbourne. With the memorable win, Rahane maintained his 100% record as Test captain, won all three matches he captained so far.

Following the Test series-leveling MCG Test victory, the cricket experts and fans have been discussing promoting Rahane as the full-time Test captain and commentator Dasgupta feels such questions are arising only because some people have a problem with Virat Kohli's expressive nature.

However, Rahane – who is known for his calm persona on the field, did an absolutely brilliant job in the Boxing Day Test but Dasgupta believes that the talks for the full-time captaincy are premature while reminding Kohli is one who led India to a historic Test series triumph last time in Australia.

Dasgupta told India Today: “I am taking nothing away from him (Rahane), but it’s just one Test match. Other leaders in the team like R Ashwin and Jasprit Bumrah also stepped up. Let’s hold on to our horses as Virat Kohli hasn’t done anything wrong either.”

He also explained why ‘people have a problem’ with Virat Kohli.

He said, “It seems like people have a problem with the way he expresses himself, but that’s the way he is. Kohli is the same captain under whom the Indian team won in Australia back in 2018-19. India was the No. 1 Test side for a very long time under his leadership. It’s good for Indian cricket that they have so many leaders, but it’s just one good win doesn’t.

Even in Adelaide, the Indian team played well and was on top of Australia except for that one session where the team went through a batting debacle. In terms of batting, a captain can’t do much.”
