India defeated New Zealand for the first time in Cricket World Cup since 2003.
India defeated New Zealand in the 21st match of the ICC World Cup 2023. This encounter was played in Dharamshala on October 22. This was the first time India defeated New Zealand in a Cricket World Cup tournament since 2003.
India captain Rohit Sharma had won the toss and chose to bowl first. Rachin Ravindra (75) and Daryl Mitchell (130) and their 159-run partnership for the third wicket took New Zealand to 273 runs in 50 overs.
For India, Mohammad Shami, playing his first match in this tournament, picked 5/54. He also became the first Indian bowler to take two five-wicket hauls in Cricket World Cups.
In response, Rohit Sharma went after the bowling from the start, scoring 46 in 40 balls with 4 fours and 4 sixes, and added 71 runs in 11 overs with Shubman Gill (26). Virat Kohli then shouldered the chase once again. He was helped by Shreyas Iyer (33), KL Rahul (27) and Ravindra Jadeja (39*).
Kohli got out for 95 runs, trying to hit a six to reach the three-figure mark when India needed just 5 runs to win. In the end, Jadeja hit a boundary to take India to a 4-wicket win with 12 balls to remain.
Just as he hit the winning shot, the camera panned towards the dressing room, where Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli hugged to celebrate and the expression of joy on the Indian captain’s face was unmissable.
