Bangladesh won the toss and chose to bat first. Shakib Al Hasan missed out due to his quad injury and Najmul Hossain Shanto captained the side in his absence. India came into this match unchanged.
Openers Tanzid Hasan and Litton Das started cautiously but opened up after settling in on a batting-friendly pitch. With Indian pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj not finding anything helpful, Rohit Sharma turned to the medium pace of Hardik Pandya looking for a breakthrough.
CWC 2023: WATCH- Virat Kohli completes Hardik Pandya’s over amongst huge cheers from crowd
Bowling his first over - the ninth of the innings - Pandya appeared to twist his ankle in his follow-through. The physio ran out immediately to attend to Pandya and worked on his ankle for several minutes. He then tried to continue his over but was in too much pain to do so.
As a result, Pandya walked off the field to get further treatment and Virat Kohli bowled the three remaining deliveries in the over. It was announced later on the broadcast that he would not return to the field for the remainder of the innings.
“Hardik Pandya's injury is being assessed at the moment and he is being taken for scans,” BCCI released an update on X.
Along with Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav, Hardik is arguably the most irreplaceable player in the India squad because of the all-round role he performs. While he is good as a stand-alone batter, his ability to bowl gives India balance.
Pandya had bowled 16 overs in India's first three World Cup matches and taken five wickets.
